Health care robots on top 10-list
American InformationWeek is an established technology network, covering various areas including healthcare. In a December-article 10 robots that could change healthcare was listed. Two of them spring from Robotdalen; Giraff and Bestic.
Giraff is a telecommunications solution by which elderly can communicate with family members and health care staff (Photo: Terése Andersson).
Giraff is a mobile communication solution which facilitates the elderly’s contact with the outside world. It is remote-controlled, on wheels and has a camera and monitor. Giraff Technologies, the company behind the product, became Robotdalen’s first international start-up when they relocated from Silicon Valley in the U.S. to Västerås in Sweden a few years back.
Bestic is an eating assistive device for people who can not eat on their own. With buttons or a joystick, the user decides what should be picked up from the plate. The product is out on the Swedish and European market and in the autumn of 2012 a clinical pilot study was conducted at a chain of non-profit nursing homes in the United States.
Both companies have received support from Robotdalen in product development and marketing.
